Who Is the Thermostat For?
As households begin the yearly changeover from air conditioning to heat, the Reporter asked residents whom the thermostat is actually for.
“It’s for my husband. He never touches it. He just stands near it, so that it knows.”
Lorraine Petrakis, 57 Hair salon owner “Technically, it’s for the furnace. I’ve installed about 900 of them, and not one family has ever let the furnace weigh in.”
Deshawn Merritt, 33 Electrician “It’s for company. Nobody in this house touches it unless we have guests, and when we have guests, nobody touches it.”
Peg Holloway, 76 Retired bank teller “My landlord says it’s for me, but it’s in his apartment.”
Ian Szabo, 28 Graduate student “The dog. He’s the only one in the house who sleeps through the night, so whatever he’s got it set to is working.”
Craig Fenwick, 45 Youth soccer coach
