Do You Open Your Bills When They Arrive?
Days after the federal deficit reached $1.992 trillion, the Reporter asked residents how they handle the envelope, and whether an unopened bill is still a bill.
“I open every one the day it comes, and I write the amount on the fridge calendar. Nobody in my house has ever been surprised by a bill, which is more than I can say for the bills.”
Marcy Hollins, 52 Dental office manager “I open them in the truck, at a red light, if the light is long. If it’s a short light, I wait for the next one.”
Tyrone Weems, 29 Delivery driver “I open them all, then I put them in a folder labeled Later. The folder is very organized and has never once been asked to explain itself.”
Bernadette Olfeld, 71 Retired school librarian “Every envelope gets opened, read, and filed within the same hour. Unopened mail is just a claim that hasn’t been adjusted yet, and I don’t work on those.”
Kevin Stroud, 44 Insurance adjuster “I open them on the first and then again on the fifteenth, in case the first one was a draft. My husband thinks that is a lot of checking, and I think it’s the only way the numbers stay honest.”
