Now That the World Cup Is Here, Can Anyone Explain Offside?
With the 48-team World Cup opening Thursday in Mexico City and 104 matches set for 16 cities in three countries, the Reporter asked residents to explain the offside rule.
“Offside is when a man is somewhere he isn’t supposed to be. I’ve been explaining it to my husband for 26 years, and he’s still in the garage.”
Wanda Pittman, 52 School bus driver “It’s like a mortgage. There’s a line, you can’t be past the line, and nobody can tell you exactly where the line was until afterward.”
Kevin Ostrowski, 37 Mortgage loan officer “I explained it to my dad once using salt and pepper shakers. He hasn’t moved them since, and we’re no longer allowed to season anything.”
Lupe Carrizales, 19 Community college student “I’ve measured property lines for 40 years, and I’m telling you, that line moves. I’d like to know who’s moving it.”
Arnold Reidy, 74 Retired land surveyor “I don’t know what it is, but I’m against it, and I’ve cleared my schedule through July 19 to say so.”
