Letters to the Editor

Readers respond to this week’s coverage of flag shirts, a word, a grocery store, a thermostat, and, in one case, a bench.

The Reporter welcomes letters from readers. Letters should be under 250 words, refer to an article by headline, and include the writer’s name and town. We do not print anonymous letters, letters written on the back of other letters, or letters addressed to a specific columnist’s mother.

  1. Shirts Stand at Attention

Re: “Nation’s Flag Shirts Now Outnumber Nation’s Flags, Continental Census Bureau Confirms”

As the owner of 212 flag shirts, I take strong exception to your report that shirts have “overtaken” flags. My shirts have not overtaken anything. They are folded in a drawer, at attention, where they belong, and every one of them would salute a flag if it had arms, which some of them do.

Also, your number is off by one. I checked my drawer this morning and there was another one.

  2. What Is the Word

Re: “Study: 9 in 10 Americans Cannot Define Word They Are Angry About”

I read your story about the word, and I am very angry about it. Could you please tell me what the word is? I would like to know what I am angry about, for my records. I have already written to my representative about it, and he is also angry, and also does not know.

  3. A Bench Is a Bench

Re: “Coach Says Team ‘Played Hard,’ Declines to Specify at What”

I have lived in this town for 41 years, and I have never once seen the bench outside the library function as a chair. It is a bench. I sat on it to write this letter, and it held me the way a bench holds you, which is to say communally. Shame on your reporter, and on the coach, for suggesting otherwise.

  4. From the Manager

Re: “I Am Perfectly Calm About the New Grocery Store Layout”

I believe I know which store Mr. Halvorsen is writing about. The cereal is in aisle 11 now because aisle 6 is closer to the door, and people need bread more urgently than they need cereal. This was explained on the sign.

I would also ask that Mr. Halvorsen stop walking the store in the old order on Saturday mornings. He is not doing anything wrong, exactly. But he nods at things, and the produce staff has asked me to say something.

  5. A Clarification From the Majority

Re: “Area Dad Declares Thermostat ‘Not a Democracy,’ Loses Vote 4-1”

As one of the four, I want to say that I voted yes because I thought we were voting on pizza. I have since learned that we were not voting on pizza. I stand by my vote.

  6. Cancel My Subscription

I have been a reader of The Continental Reporter for 30 years, and I am writing to cancel my subscription because of your recent coverage, which I have not read but have heard a great deal about. I will not be told what to think by a newspaper. I will be told by my neighbor, Gary, who reads it.
