Opinion Letters

Letters to the Editor: September

Readers respond to recent coverage of a dishwasher, a pony, a thermostat, offside, a man who may be named Gary, and the hot dog, again.

The Reporter welcomes letters from readers. Letters should be under 250 words, refer to an article by headline, and include the writer’s name and town. We do not print anonymous letters, letters dictated over the phone from a moving vehicle, or letters that arrive wet.

  1. It Was Me

Re: “My Call Is Important to Them. They Have Told Me So 146 Times.”

I believe I was the one who answered. I said, “Thank you for holding, my name is Kyle, how can I help you today?” and a man said “Kyle,” in a way I have not stopped thinking about, and then the line went dead.

I want Mr. Halvorsen to know that I did not hang up. I have been trying to call him back ever since. His call is important to me. I am writing this on hold.

  2. Biscuit Would Like a Raise

Re: “What the Founders Would Have Said About the Group Chat, and Why I Now Reply by Pony”

Biscuit has carried 23 letters for Mrs. Merriweather-Dunn since July, and he has started stopping at her nephew’s house on his own even when there is no letter, and standing there until someone reads him something.

Also, one of the letters was ice. I would like that noted.

  3. I Am at the Front Desk

Re: “Who Is the Thermostat For?”

I have worked at the front desk of this newspaper since 2009, and I want to state for the record that I have still never seen Mr. Whitacre.

A man did come into the lobby one Tuesday in August and stood at the courtesy phone for 70 minutes. But he was on the phone the entire time, so I could not tell who he was. When he left, the phone rang, and I answered it, and it was a man at a hockey rink, asking for him by name.

  4. I Know What It Is

Re: “Now That the World Cup Is Here, Can Anyone Explain Offside?”

I know what offside is. It is when my brother is in my room. Please put this in the paper so he sees it.

  5. From the Silver Sedan

Re: “The Arrows in the Parking Lot Are Not Suggestions, and I Am the Only One Who Has Noticed”

My name is Gary, and I drive a silver sedan. I want Mr. Halvorsen to know that I have waved at people in that lot for 11 years, and he is the first one who ever rolled down his window.

I have since begun following the arrows. It takes much longer. I am not happy about it. I am also not sure it was me. There are a lot of us named Gary in silver sedans, and we have discussed it, and none of us are sure.

  6. I Have Now Been Contacted

Re: “Is a Hot Dog a Sandwich, and Have You Been Contacted About It?”

In July, I wrote to say that I had never been contacted about the hot dog. I have now been contacted. A man came to my door on Aug. 14 and asked for my position, and I delivered my prepared remarks, all 40 minutes of them, and he thanked me and said he had the wrong house.

I would like to know whose house he wanted, and what they think. I have not turned off the porch light.
